| Year | Occasion | Date |
|---|---|---|
| 2027 | Prakash Purab of Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji (Poh Sudi 7) |
Calculated for Amritsar. SGPC and government announcements take precedence.
How the date is fixed
The SGPC calendar keeps the Prakash Purab on Poh Sudi 7, a lunar date. It moves between late December and mid-January, and because a lunar year is shorter than a solar one, some English years have it twice and some not at all. There was none in 2026: it fell on 27 December 2025 and next falls on 15 January 2027. In the original 2003 Nanakshahi calendar it had a fixed date, 5 January.
The tenth Guru
Guru Gobind Singh Ji was born Gobind Rai at Patna in 1666, where Takht Sri Harimandir Ji Patna Sahib stands. He became Guru at the age of nine after the martyrdom of his father, Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji. In 1699 he created the Khalsa at Anandpur Sahib. He was a poet and a warrior, gave his four sons and his mother for the Panth, and before he left this world at Nanded in 1708 he passed the Guruship to Sri Guru Granth Sahib.
How it is celebrated
Gurdwaras hold Akhand Paths, diwans and kirtan, and the days before are marked by Nagar Kirtans led by the Panj Piare, with gatka displays and langar along the way. The biggest celebrations are at Takht Sri Patna Sahib, Takht Sri Kesgarh Sahib (Anandpur Sahib) and Sri Harmandir Sahib. It is a gazetted holiday in Punjab.
