Desi months follow the Sun
A desi month begins on Sangrand, the day the Sun moves into the next sign of the zodiac, and lasts 29 to 32 days. Because the Sun keeps a steady pace, desi dates fall on nearly the same English dates every year: Vaisakh begins around 14 April and Poh around mid-December.
Lunar dates follow the Moon
The lunar month is split into the dark half, Vadi, and the bright half, Sudi. In Punjab the month ends on Puranmashi, the full moon, so Vadi comes first. Every two or three years an extra (adhik) month is added; in 2026 it was Adhik Jeth.
The Nanakshahi era
Years are counted from 1469, when Guru Nanak Dev Ji was born, and each year opens on 1 Chet in mid-March. The SGPC adopted the Nanakshahi calendar in 2003 and amended it in 2010, which is why some gurdwaras abroad keep different dates.
Why some dates move
Days tied to the Sun, like Vaisakhi, Maghi or the Shaheedi Jor Mela, stay put. Days tied to the Moon, like Guru Nanak Dev Ji's Gurpurab, Bandi Chhor Divas and Hola Mohalla, can shift by up to a month from one year to the next.

The words you will meet in a jantri or a gurdwara announcement, in plain English.
- Sangrand ਸੰਗਰਾਂਦ
- The first day of a desi month, when the Sun enters a new sign. From the Sanskrit sankranti.
- Masya ਮੱਸਿਆ
- The new-moon day, the last day of the dark half (Vadi). Popular for bathing at sarovars.
- Puranmashi ਪੂਰਨਮਾਸ਼ੀ
- The full-moon day. In Punjab it closes the lunar month, and several Gurpurabs fall on it.
- Vadi ਵਦੀ
- The dark half of the lunar month, from the day after Puranmashi to Masya. Also spelt badi.
- Sudi ਸੁਦੀ
- The bright half, from the day after Masya to Puranmashi, as the Moon grows.
- Tithi ਤਿੱਥ
- A lunar day: the time the Moon takes to move 12° ahead of the Sun. It can begin at any hour.
- Adhik ਅਧਿਕ
- An extra lunar month, added when no Sangrand falls in a lunar month, roughly every 32 months.
- Nanakshahi ਨਾਨਕਸ਼ਾਹੀ
- The Sikh calendar era, counting years from 1469, with the year opening on 1 Chet.
- Bikrami ਬਿਕ੍ਰਮੀ
- The Vikram Samvat era, 56 or 57 years ahead of the English year, used for the lunar dates.
- Jantri ਜੰਤਰੀ
- A printed almanac of dates, tithis, festivals and auspicious times, found in many Punjabi homes.
- Gurpurab ਗੁਰਪੁਰਬ
- A day remembering a Guru: Prakash (birth), Gurgaddi (accession), Joti Jot or Shaheedi.
- Barah Maha ਬਾਰਹ ਮਾਹਾ
- A poem of the twelve months. Guru Arjan Dev Ji's Barah Maha in Raag Majh is read on each Sangrand.

Questions
What is the Punjabi calendar?
It is the set of calendars used together in Punjab: the English date, the desi solar months that begin on Sangrand (Chet to Phagun), and the lunar Bikrami dates (Vadi and Sudi) that fix Masya, Puranmashi and many Gurpurabs. The SGPC publishes them together as the Nanakshahi calendar.
Which desi month is it now?
It is Katak (ਕੱਤਕ), and today is 2 Katak, Nanakshahi 558. Maghar begins on Sangrand, 16 November 2026.
How are Nanakshahi years counted?
From 1469, the year of Guru Nanak Dev Ji's birth. Year 1 began in 1469, so a year starting in March 2026 is numbered 558. The new year begins on 1 Chet, in mid-March, and dates from January to mid-March still carry the previous year's number.
Why do Gurpurab dates change every year?
Many Gurpurabs, such as Guru Nanak Dev Ji's Prakash Purab on Katak Puranmashi, are fixed to a lunar date. A lunar year is about 11 days shorter than a solar year, so the English date moves each year, and an extra lunar month every two or three years pulls it back.
What is the difference between Sangrand, Masya and Puranmashi?
Sangrand is solar: the day the Sun enters a new sign and a desi month begins. Masya (new moon) and Puranmashi (full moon) are lunar and come about two weeks apart. All three are kept at gurdwaras with special diwans.
Why can a printed jantri differ from this site by a day?
Dates depend on the place they are calculated for and the rule used when a tithi or the Sun's entry falls close to sunrise. We calculate for Amritsar and follow the SGPC wherever it has published a date.

About this calendar
Punjab keeps several calendars at once. Farmers plan by the desi months, gurdwaras by the Nanakshahi calendar, and families by all of them. This site calculates the desi and lunar dates from the positions of the Sun and Moon over Amritsar, follows the SGPC calendar wherever the SGPC has published a date, and takes holidays from the Punjab Government notification. Each page says which dates are official and which are calculated.
